Hello everyone
Here is a quite diversified email with subjects ranging from the terrible effects
and environmental disaster resulting from the NATO bombing to the accelerating global
warming phenomenon, including a number of comments made by some of you to recent
posts sent to this list or only to a couple people. This all makes for a composite picture
of a world in the middle of a major crisis -- and it barely scratches the surface
of the issues that need to be dealt with, one way or another, sooner of later. It's
not all dark, as there are many glimmers of hope, yet it requires a balanced mind and a
firmly grounded heart to lucidly look at the issues presented here (as in many previous
posts) and find the inner resolve to continue forging ahead with a renewed commitment
to do our best to make a positive difference in the potential outcome of our cumulative
global predicaments.
And it is a reminder, once again, to make sure we don't buy into all the disinformation
and one-sided picture of "reality" peddled by the mass media.
And most importantly, we must continue to radiate counterbalancing energies of Love
and Peace and trust that, in the end, everything will turn out OK.

Subject: Serbia bombing
Here's a rather poignant comment from my friend Neda in Belgrade, about the
bombing of factories. Regardless of the rightness or wrongness of bombing,
I believe that bombing environmentally-sensitive targets is very risky and
questionable, even though, in the logic of warfare, it is regarded as
'legitimate'.

It is half past four in the morning and I am waiting for the informations
from the "Belgrade information centre" about the gases which are comming
from the oil factory and chemistry industry which were hit few hours ago
and which are, sorry, were, placed in the town which is almost connected to
the Belgrade. The cloud is comming this way, up the river Danube. Couple of
small villages between Belgrade and Pancevo are being evacuated.
Four kids aged 10 - 15 are sleeping at my home (two mine, one relative and
one friend of my daughter), and I do not dare go to sleep.

Poison cloud engulfs Belgrade
An ecological disaster was unfolding yesterday after
Nato bombed a combined petrochemicals, fertiliser and
refinery complex on the banks of the Danube in the
northern outskirts of Belgrade.
A series of detonations that shook the whole city early
yesterday sent a toxic cloud of smoke and gas hundreds
of feet into the night sky. In the dawn the choking cloud
could be seen spreading over the entire northern skyline.
Among the cocktail of chemicals billowing over hundreds
of thousands of homes were the toxic gas phosgene,
chlorine and hydrochloric acid. Workers at the industrial
complex in Pancevo panicked and decided to release tons
of ethylene dichloride, a carcinogen, into the Danube,
rather than risk seeing it blown up.

UK Paper: NATO Ready to Invade Kosovo in May
LONDON (April 18) XINHUA - NATO is making plans for a ground invasion of Kosovo
as early as the end of May, Britain's newspaper Observer said on
Sunday.
Some 80,000 troops had been earmarked for the operation and that some American
troops had already started training in Colorado, according to the paper, which
quoted senior sources in London and Washington as saying that the accelerated
timetable followed insistence by NATO's political leaders that the bombing
campaign against Yugoslavia must be over within three months.
Referring to what it called a radical rethinking of NATO strategy, the paper
quoted one source as saying last week that "we are no longer talking about
simply sending peacekeeping troops into an entirely permissive environment."

i seem to recall after our ern gathering here in santa barbara suggesting that

uplifting. I am collecting each one of them & reading them to a group
that I hold each fortnight. I spoke at Easter to them of the meditations
& all are joining in each day. It makes us all feel so connected to the
whole world in this vision of Peace in Kosovo & other trouble spots of

Palden's article about Kosovo illness and remedy was brilliant. It went beyond the
knee jerk reaction that we have to war if we are peace lovers.
Looking at the bigger karmic lessons that we have to learn for the human
race to move forward. We are our brother's keeper and we must not turn a blind eye
to injustice.
The idea that any ruler can do what they like because it is on sovereign
territory is an out dated notion. It is these same dynamics that allow child abuse
and violence to remain behind closed doors.
Let's give Peace a chance. Let's make sure that we start with making sure
that we treat everyone with whom we are in contact w ith love and respect. At the
same time we should help in any way can to relieve the suffering of the Kosovars
and bring light love understanding and compassion to the whole situation

Global warming may increase ozone hole

Despite international measures to reduce atmospheric concentrations
of ozone destroying halogens to protect the ozone layer, global
warming may lead to a weakening of the ozone layer, according to
international scientists.
A team of German, Swiss and British scientists reported in the March 26
issue of the journal Science that while future climate change is expected to
heat up the lower atmosphere it is likely to cool the air at the altitude of the
ozone layer in the stratosphere.
Cooler air in the stratosphere may lead to increased polar stratospheric
clouds, which are believed to play an essential role in ozone hole
chemistry.
In particular, the cloud particles may settle lower atmospheric layers,
thereby removing trace gases which under normal circumstances lead to a
deactivation of ozone-destroying chlorine.
In other words, in a colder stratosphere the sediment particles may inhibit an
important mechanism protecting ozone.

(ENN) Decades of warming temperatures in the Antarctic have caused two
ice shelves to break up and melt faster than
anyone expected, scientists from Colorado and the United Kingdom said
Wednesday. A warming trend in the region has caused the annual melt
season to increase by two to three weeks over the last 20 years, say
researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder's National Snow and
Ice Data Center and the British Antarctic Survey. In fact, the Larsen B
and Wilkens ice sheets on the Antarctic Peninsula have lost nearly 3,000
square kilometers of their total area in the last year, according to
satellite photos monitored by NSIDC.
According to the photos, the Larsen B ice shelf on the eastern side of
the peninsula has continued to crumble after an initial
small retreat in spring 1998. In a series of events that began in
November 1998, an additional 1,714 square kilometers of shelf
area caved away, said Research Associate Ted Scambos of CU-Boulder's
NSIDC.
On the southwest side of the peninsula, the Wilkins ice shelf retreated
nearly 1,100 square kilometers in early March of last
year, said Scambos. His team and colleagues at the British Antarctic
Survey in Cambridge had predicted the breakup would
happen and had their suspicions confirmed by satellite radar images.
"The radar images showed a large area of completely shattered ice,
indicating an ice front 35 kilometers back from its previous
extent," said Scambos. "The sudden appearance of thousands of small
icebergs suggests that the shelves are essentially broken
up in place and then flushed out by storms or currents afterward."

Two Antarctic ice shelves have broken up more quickly than anyone predicted,
indicating that the effects of global warming may be accelerating, scientists
said on Wednesday.
They published satellite images showing the Larsen B and Wilkins ice
shelves in "full retreat," having lost nearly 1,100 square miles (3,000 square
km) of their total area in the last year.
Ted Scambos of the University of Colorado at Boulder said his team and
colleagues at the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge had predicted the
break-up would happen, but not this quickly.
"It happened much faster than we thought," Scambos said in a telephone
interview. "Within this last calendar year we saw a retreat not only on
Larsen but the Wilkins."
...Sea level rising
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, global sea level has risen about 4
inches (10 cm) during the past century. It says if all the Earth's glaciers
melted, which is unlikely, sea levels would rise by 260 feet (80 meters).
Antarctica, the fifth largest continent, contains about 90 percent of the
world's glacial ice.

I am an Epidemiologist. My specialty is in higher mathematics, with
applications in the radiobiology and the biomedical sciences.
You can quote me on the following comment on the crisis in Kosovo:
Depleted (DU) uranium is one of the largest categories of radioactive waste
produced for the nuclear weapons and nuclear reactor industry. It is
highly toxic to humans, both chemically as a heavy metal and radiologically
as an alpha particle emitter which is very dangerous when taken internally.
Recently it has been a substitute for lead in bullets and missiles by the US
and UK, and was first used extensively by the West in the Gulf War. It is
most likely a major contributor to the Gulf War Syndrome experienced both
by the veterans and the people of Iraq.
When used in war, the DU bursts into flame from the impact when it hits a
target. It can pierce tanks and armoured cars, releasing inside of them a
deadly radioactive aerosol of uranium, unlike anything seen before. It can
kill everyone in a tank. This ceramic aerosol is much lighter than uranium
dust. It can travel in air tens of kilometres from the point of release,
or be stirred up in dust and resuspended in air with wind or human
movement. It is very small and can be breathed in by anyone: a baby,
pregnant woman, the elderly, the sick. This radioactive ceramic can stay
deep in the lungs for years, irradiating the tissue with powerful alpha
particles within about a 30 micron sphere, causing emphysema and/or
fibrosis. The ceramic can also be swallowed and do damage to the
gastro-intestinal tract. In time, it penetrates the lung tissue and enters
into the blood stream. It can be stored in liver, kidney, bone or other
tissues, again for years, irradiating all of the delicate tissues located
near its storage place. It can effect the blood, which is the basis of our
immune system, and do damage to the renal system as it is eventually
excreted in the urine. It can also initiate cancer or promote cancers
which have been initiated by other cancinogens.
In October 1998 the WHO undertook a two year study of the increasing cancer
rates, especially leukemia in young children, which have been note in
southern Iraq where most of the war took place.
The WHO report is not yet out, but newer data from Iraq tells the story of
even more dramatic increases in cancer rates, especially among the Iraqi
veterans who participated in the war. In the West, thousands of veterans
are recognized as seriously ill with an unknown syndrome, and we have been
able to document DU in their urine as late as 7 or 8 years after the war.
There is no natural source of DU to explain this phenomena!
It is imperative that we all denouce this radiation and toxic chemical
warfare! It has now been used by the US and Britain against Iraq and in
Bosnia. It is now being used in Kosovo (NATO announcement in Europe, 30
March 1999). It has been condemed by the United Nations Human Rights
Tribunal (August 1996 Session of the UN Commission on Human Rights,
Sub-Commission on the Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of
Minorities). The Human Rights Commission has requested that the Secretary
General prepare a written report on DU and certain other weapons of mass
destruction (Resolution 1997/36, which also established a UN Rapporteur to
take over the study of DU and other weapons of mass destruction on behalf
of the UN). The damage being done will not only cause incredible and
unending suffering to today's victims, but the genetic damage it may cause
can be passed on to their offspring. Such weapons and war itself need to
be condemned as utter barbarianism!
This is certainly not to be interpreted as condoning so-called ethnic
cleasing or any of the nationalistic actions of the Yugoslav government.
However, as one of the Professors at the University of Toronto said, "I can
offer a different and more effective policy, but I would not start from
here". This Kosovo action is resulting from deep seated conflicting ideas
of "World Order" - that proposed by NATO's vision of itself as a world
police force, and that of the OSCE (Organization for Security and
Cooperation in Europe) which sees security rising out of honest cooperation
and legal resolution of conflicting opinions.

Thank you for your thought-provoking e-mail.
You may not be aware that certainly in my case, from my very limited
base of knowledge and experience, you are preaching to
the converted. I tend to agree wholly with
writers such as Immanuel Wallerstein, who provide
a systemic sketch of how capitalism will eventually
destroy itself - it's obvious, a thing cannot expand,
and expand, and expand, on a contained, limited
area, such as the earth - there are only so many
resources to plunder, only so much illusionary debt
that can be created.
There is no question and no doubt that that base human
impulse of greed, carefully crafted into "interest-based
credit and debt" as a tool for consuming, consuming,
consuming is at the root here. In ancient Hindu writings,
it was scribed that we could take from the earth, but
always, always should replace with more than we have
taken. As humans, we really have no excuse for the
havoc we have wreaked on this planet, its creatures,
and each other - all the wisdom and guidelines were
there, in most of the ancient religious texts, before
they were perverted by human agendas.
The question is: HOW do we get out of this trap?
How? I mean, if I really believed that going on a fast
to the death would do it, I would, without hesistation.
Throughout the ages we have had so many enlightened
teachers - Jesus, Buddha, the Vedas, Gandhi...I could
go on and on. But STILL, it seems the "majority" impulse
is to hate and destroy, driven by greed, "me-first",
like unthinking automatons.
Given your/our Easter 2001 Vision - yes, I saw it,
I still see it, the final version - a gathering of
shamans, north american indians, aborigines, women
from oppressive cultures such as that found in Pakistan,
African choirs, children, all the oppressed groups in
the world, on the slopes of Table Mountain, powered by
light, and the most incredibly beautiful music, as
a "gateway", a vehicle through which the formiddable
and HUGE Power of Love can pour into the world, onto
the Earth, and touch human hearts world-wide.
But as soon as I start to think of the practical side -
it needs money, equipment, transport, lighting, and
all that to make this a reality, I "shut down" - it needs
the very thing, the very mode of operating that we are
saying no to, in order to make it happen. It needs
money.
I don't have answers, these are just thoughts that have
arisen from reading your e-mail, in our on-going
dialogue, which seems to be weaving its own pattern,
spreading to other places......and leading us somewhere...
it is evolving.

no part of the solution. Kosovo is not a political problem... It is a problem of
spiritual defeat and hate, caused by subcultures supporting each other by
opposing each other... the most ancient of terrorist games.
There is nothing whatsoever that anyone outside the murderous game can do about
the game. All we can do is start changing the roots of what allows the games to
continue century after century. We cannot attack the stem, or leaf, or flower of
the ancient poisonous weed of slaughter, but we can change the soil it grows
from.
If war and conflict was something that grew from ignorance of the results of it's
practice and a kind of illness of the spirit in individuals, then meditations and
prayers and other such healing efforts would have long ago ended it all... but it
is not from ignorance of results or illness of the spirit in individuals; it is deliberate,
knowledgeable, and intentional, well planned out and supported by intimidation and
coercion, and organized intensely. The men and women who do it are brainwashed with
extremes of threat and enforced conditioning, and their spirits diminished to blind obedience...
In Kosovo, "Fight 'our' enemy or they ('we') kill your family" is the motivation
for the common soldier on all sides and the glory of the subculture and the lure
of absolute power is the motivator for the generals... and all the politics is purely
a smoke screen, and the only subculture involved is the global military subculture
doing it's old bloody thing.
In this country, and in many of the so called 'first world' countries, direct
slavery of men and women in the name of glory is not the way the military
works... it does not need to, although if it did need to, it would. So it's hard
for civilians from the richer countries to understand the dynamics of what is going
on. Social conditioning works better here, both to get recruits and to
mislead the general population as to what the military is all about...
One of the things that all forerunners have to watch out for, a danger, which as
we gather together to make a difference, we will attract; Politically divided pundits
and fanatics will want to use any group of people for their own purposes, and will
say and do anything to influence them into obeying. Forerunners especially, for like
the antiwar movement and the civil rights movement, we will be seen as naive and easily
manipulated simply because of what we say we are trying to do.
Forerunners need to develop a finely tuned propaganda filter for all politics and
military data... be neither left nor right nor center, for identifying with the smoke
screen will make any spiritual vision of the future go up in a puff of
smoke. Don't let the media or the military or the government define our
positions on anything at all, because the common 'axiom' of propaganda is "never
tell the truth" so all they say is most likely a lie designed to alter opinion.
There is no 'politics' in a geodesic system, so we really need to get it going.
But it can only be set up locally, by 40+ people, and then linked with other
groups of 40+ gathered locally...
