Subject: More feedbacks on the Millennium Gathering AND - as usual - much much more

Hello everyone

Since I'm leaving for a few days and won't be able to receive or send emails for the next 10 days or so, I'm quickly putting together this email to keep you posted on the latest feedbacks received and some important news.

I've already received a great number of very good feedbacks on the document "Pathways to Unity" and will probably forward them for your review soon. I also still have nearly 20 other large emails about a number of important topics that I'd like to send you but don't know when I'll be able to do so.

Stay tuned -- most importantly inwardly and keep sending good vibes to the people in Kosovo and Serbia - especially the ones that lead to forgiving and the releasing of old hatred - for there is much healing to be done there.

Happy solstice everyone ;-)

Subject: World Peace Festival coming up

Hi Jean:

Here's a bit about our World Peace Festival coming up:

Our 6th Annual World Peace Festival in the park next Sunday, June 20,1999,
at High Park in Toronto. It will be a day (10am - 6pm) of meditation with
an abundance of inspiring people providing guided meditations, prayer,
visualization and reflection. As well, we will celebrate with musicians,
singers, dancers, comedians and other entertainers who will enliven and
inspire us with their creative talents. It will be a day of great joy.

I recommend that people come if they can or else meditate with us at some
point in the afternoon between 12 and 6pm. We will be meditating on the
half hour starting at 12:30 for 30 minutes out of every hour.

Blessings to you,

PS We have no website at present. Thanks again. Love, Cathy

In some level I can see your work (our work as a whole) reaching its goal
already:All the good thoughtforms that has been created within the minds
of thousands people, all the connections that already has been made and
realized. I do appreciate all the work that is involved to this
common and hight and beautiful Aim. Somehow I can see
its great value and great meaning already met in so many levels;

All the mental and emotional sharing that, due to you newsletters,
have already been achieved. Not a day is missed that a good word,

Hello Jean,

The aquarius festival http://woodstock.vision.net.au is happening 21-23 jan
2000 though possibilities for the millenium event worldwide are still being
considered. What about a world scale internet gathering of perhaps smaller
events akk occuring at the same time on new years day or eve. Obviously
there are existing events of a larger scale that could be drawn in. Eg The
massive WOODFORD festival in QLD australia.

It may be too late for this idea, unless there is a lot of folks and
money available, but I was just looking at your videopage with the
people making circles around a large globe of Home, and I flashed upon
the work of R. Buckminster Fuller. He wanted to build a large
transparent globe, etched with the features of the continents, etc, in
perfect scale, (It's the only way to see the whole of the planet all at
once without distortion) and have computer controlled colored led lights
embedded in the plastic which would be able to show almost any data like
population density, lights of the cities at night, ecodamage,
unpopulated lands, pollution globally, economic levels, just every kind
of demographic and data possible, all on this huge sphere model of Gaia.

It was not really possible when he suggested it, because computers were
in their infancy, but it is very possible now and wouldn't be that
expensive. It could be done in six months, but it would require enough
money and a lot of work. Actually it could be set up in December and
tested before 2000. Getting the support would be the hardest part, not
the technical part. Actually, it could be a completely transparent
featureless sphere and have everything presented on it through embedded
leds and projections. We could even make it spin and show weather
patterns from sat pictures. It might be able to make the ecoentity
obvious to everyone.

It would be a major symbol and attract visitors from all over the
planet, as well as make people very hot to come to the ceremony,
especially government leaders.

Just an idea...

THANKS a lot Roan for sharing your idea. Sounds quite wonderful. Yet with no funding and not much hope to achieve the big dream, I doubt it will be possible to manifest this idea anyway.

BTW I did not find time yet to share with everyone some of the *numerous* feedbacks received on the piece from you I posted a couple months ago. Anyway you got them all and got quite a bit of steam from all this I think. I was glad to see such a response. I keep them and hope to share them with all when there is room for this email.

Sorry for not corresponding more with you also as I've been way too busy with too many things to be able to do so.

Have a great summer ;-)

Giza 2000 Millennium Celebrations - by Robert Bauval

I have just returned from Egypt, and I thought your readers may be interested
in the latest on the Millennium Celebrations at Giza planned for 31st
December 1999.

There is good news and bad news.

The bad news is that there has been much rumble in the Egyptian Parliament
against this event. The main grievance is that it is costing the Egyptian
taxpayers an arm and a leg. Figures range from 6 to 10 million dollars. The
other problem is that the celebrations fall in the Muslim month of Ramadan,
when hotels and restaurants are forbidden to serve alcoholic beverages to
locals and foreigners alike. Officials thus fear that foreigners may bring
alcoholic drinks to the Giza plateau and offend the local population. Another
bad news is that it seems now unlikely that the 'door' at the end of the
southern shaft of the Queen's Chamber in the Great Pyramid is going to be
opened for the celebrations. Dr. Hawass has let it known privately that this
event will take place sometime later in the year 2000. More bad news is that
tickets may cost as much as 250 dollars.

Now for the good news.

The show is going to be bigger than previously thought. Jean-Michele Jarre
will perform for two hours, from about 11 p.m. on the 31st December 1999 to 1
p.m. on the 1st January 2000. The show will start at about 7 p.m. (sunset)
and finish at 6 a.m. (sunrise) the next day. Several musical bands will
participate during those hours, and the voice of the (now dead) Egyptian
diva, Om Kalthoum, will be played during intervals. At the stroke of midnight
2000 children holding candles will parade in front of the Great Pyramid.
There will be 20 huge tents set up, each capable of housing 500 people. Each
tent will have its own toilets and first-aid facilities. A maximum of 20,000
people will be allowed on the Giza plateau. Others -estimated at 250,000-will
have to watch from the surrounding area.

There is, as always. Much confusion about what exactly will happen during the
celebrations. Rumours that the rock band Pink Floyd is coming are rife, but
probably false. There is a London agency who is selling advance tickets at
the tune of $1,500, but the Egyptian authorities have denied any connection,
and insist that there will be 'official' tour operators responsible for the
sale of tickets. As for the placing of a gilded capstone on top of the Great
Pyramid, this is going according to plan, although no details of how it will
be done have been released. To make matters worse, there is the opera of Aida
that is being staged at the Giza plateau in October 1999, making any early
preparations for the Millennium party almost impossible until the Aida opera
is over.

Stay tuned for an announcement shortly concerning a special 'astrological
magical mass' using the stars and the Giza monuments and that will run from
11.30 p.m. on the 31st December 1999 to 12.30 p.m. on the 1st January 2000
organised by Power Places Inc. and Quest Travel Ltd.

A tourist in Vienna is going through a graveyard and all of a sudden he
hears some music. No one is around, so he starts searching for the source.
He finally locates the origin and finds it is coming from a grave with a
headstone that reads: Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827. Then he realizes
that the music is the Ninth Symphony and it is being played backward!
Puzzled, he leaves the graveyard and persuades a friend to return with him.
By the time they arrive back at the grave, the music has changed. This time
it is the Seventh Symphony, but like the previous piece, it is being played
backward. Curious, the men agree to consult a music scholar. When they
return with the expert, the Fifth Symphony is playing, again backward. The
expert notices that the symphonies are being played in the reverse order in
which they were composed, the 9th, then the 7th, then the 5th. By the next
day the word has spread and a throng has gathered around the grave. They
are all listening to the Second Symphony being played backward. Just then
the graveyard's caretaker ambles up to the group. Someone in the group asks
him if he has an explanation for the music. "Don't you get it?" the
caretaker says incredulously.

"Shifting Fortunes: The Perils of the Growing Wealth Gap in America"
From: Robert Weissman <rob@essential.org>

As the Dow Jones industrial average shoots past 11,000 on its way to the
stratosphere, could we pause for a moment of silence to recognize the
wealth disparity that has resulted and the threat it poses to our fragile

If you read and listen to the corporate press -- the Wall Street
cheerleaders at Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal, Investor's Business
Daily, or the other major corporate news services -- you might think that the
market boom has resulted in wealth all around.

For the most part, the corporate press, caught up in their euphoria over
this bubble economy, has ignored the reality on the ground.

They generally ignored, for example, the bit of reality recently presented in
succinct detail by the Boston- based United for a Fair Economy.

Last month, the group issued "Shifting Fortunes: The Perils of the Growing
Wealth Gap in America," a report that features the latest findings of economist
Edward Wolff of New York University, a leading authority on wealth distribution.

This is what the report found:

* Most households have lower net worth, adjusting for inflation, than they did
in 1983, when the Dow was still at 1,000.

* From 1983 to 1998, the S&P 500 grew a cumulative 1,336 percent. But the
wealthiest households reaped most of the gains.

* Since the mid-1970s, the top 1 percent of households have doubled their share
of the national wealth. The top 1 percent of U.S. households now have more
wealth than the entire bottom 95 percent.

* The top 1 percent of households control 40 percent of the wealth.
Financial wealth is even more concentrated. The top one percent control
nearly half of all financial wealth (net worth minus equity in
owner-occupied housing).

* Microsoft CEO Bill Gates owns more wealth than the bottom 45 percent of
American households combined. In the fall of 1997, Gates was worth more than the
combined Gross National Product of Central America -- for you geography buffs,
that's Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama,
Honduras, Nicaragua and Belize. By the fall of 1998, Gates' $60 billion
was worth more than the GNPs of Central America plus Jamaica and Bolivia.

* The boom has been a bust for millions of Americans. The
inflation-adjusted net worth of the median household fell from $54,600 in 1989
to $49,900 in 1997. Nearly one out of five households have zero or negative net
worth (greater debts than assets), an increase from the

* Workers are earning less, adjusting for inflation, than they did when
Richard Nixon was president. Average weekly wages for workers in 1998 were 12
percent below 1973, adjusting for inflation. Productivity grew nearly 33 percent
in the same period.

* Families have sunk deeper into debt. Household debt as a percentage of
personal income rose from 58 percent in 1973 to an estimated 85 percent in 1997.
Total credit card debt soared from $243 billion in 1990 to $560
billion in 1997. Credit card limits have risen to the point that the
average person can charge more than eight times what they already owe.
As of 1997, almost 60 percent of American households carried credit card
balances -- balances that average more than $7,000, costing these
households more than $1,000 per year in interest and fees.

There is little question that wealth concentration presented in this
report is being fueled by corporate greed. And the resulting wealth
inequality poses serious threats to our democracy and civic life.

"The wealth gap reinforces -- and is reinforced by -- widening disparities in
education, economic opportunity, and quality of life," says Chuck Collins,
co-director of United for a Fair Economy, and a co-author of the report.

"Even the affluent lose from inequality as it hurts life expectancy for rich and
poor, fuels violence, and denies all of us the contributions of people whose
opportunities are denied."

Another co-author of the report, Juliet Schor, argues that "health,
well-being and satisfaction appear to be heavily influenced by the ways in which
economic resources, prestige and social position are distributed."

"In more unequal societies, human well-being and quality of life appear to be
lower," Schor says. Wolff makes the point that "wealth, more than
income, directly translates into political power." To counter the wealth
threat to democracy, Wolff proposes a wealth tax on the richest Americans.

As an act of capitalist self-preservation, we think Gates and his buddies should

GM crops can cross-pollinate: official

Guardian staff and agencies
Thursday June 17, 1999

New Government research on GM crops has found they can cross-pollinate
with other plants nearby. It means guidelines on growing genetically
modified crops may have to change.
The findings, likely to prove embarrassing to ministers, are said to show
evidence of "transgenic pollution" from GM crops to neighbouring fields.

The report was commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and
Food from the John Innes Centre in Norwich. Experts at the research
centre were asked to investigate claims that current safeguards were not
enough to prevent GM pollen from test sites contaminating other crops,
including those grown by organic farmers.

According to the Soil Association the report concludes that the safe
planting distances designed to keep GM plants out of range of other crops
are inadequate.

If this is the case it will force the Government to re-assess the
voluntary guidelines issued by the Supply Chain Initiative on Modified
Agricultural Crops (Scimac), the body that regulates GM crop experiments.

A MAFF spokesman said: "If the report makes suggestions, then we will
definitely look at them and see if they are workable or practicable." The
report is not yet published on the internet, and according to MAFF may
not be electronically available for up to two weeks.

The Government faced calls from its backbenchers to debate the report .
But the leader of the House of Commons, Margaret Beckett , said she could
not promise an early debate and repeated the Government's call for the
discussion to be based on science, not hearsay.

Agriculture Minister Nick Brown who attended the document launch at
Westminster was asked if he regretted the introduction of genetically
modified crop trials in the countryside.

He replied: "No," adding that questions about cross contamination were
always a subject for discussion when organic produce first came on stream
and long before GM crops. Mr Brown said the current field trials were
being done to establish the facts about GM crops and assured consumers.
"There is no foundation for fears about foods in the market place. I have
absolute confidence in the regulatory regime."

Meanwhile, the Soil Association, which licenses 1,000 organic farmers in
the UK, is setting tough new rules to maintain the purity of organically
grown crops. Letters going out to farmers today instruct them to inform
the Association if their fields are within six miles from a GM test site.
Farmers who fall into this category will have their crops monitored. If
significant GM pollution is discovered, their organic status will be

GM crops are now being grown on four farm-scale sites in England - at
Mortimer, near Reading, Berkshire; Glentham in Lincolnshire; Lyng in
Norfolk; and Watlington in Oxfordshire. There are also more than 140 much
smaller experimental sites spread around the English countryside.

Crops on a fifth large site were burned by the organic farmer taking part
in the trial after the Soil Association threatened to withdraw his
certification. The farmer's organic beans were growing just six metres
away from a GM crop field.

Catherine Fookes, campaigns manager for the Soil Association, said: "We
want the Government to stop these large trials right now. They were
started without anyone thinking of the consequences.

"This research should have been carried out before the trials were
embarked upon. Now the Government has dug itself into a real hole,
because the results show you cannot prevent contamination with the
current distances."

At present the safe "buffer zones" around GM oil seed rape or fodder
maize extend for a distance of 200 metres. For sugar beet the safe
distance is 600 metres. Six months ago a study by the National Pollen
Research Unit commissioned by the Soil Association said GM pollen could
contaminate crops many miles away.

The research showed that more than 80% of rape seed pollen was carried by
bees, and bees could fly more than three miles. Wind could transport it
considerably further, it was claimed.

Greenpeace campaign director Dr Doug Parr said: "The Government should
listen to what the people are demanding and stop field trials.
Unacceptable environmental pollution is inevitable. They promised the
people choice. If they don't act, this choice will be taken away. It is
ridiculous to set thresholds for pollution that is living and will multiply.

"This poll shows that the public won't swallow the contamination of
organic crops with GM pollution. Consumers have already voted with their
purses against GM foods and in favour of healthy, modern organic
alternatives. The Government should respond to the public's concern and
protect organic produce rather than continuing to release GM pollution
into the countryside and thereby consigning organic agriculture to its
death bed."
