Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001

Dear Jean,

What a year this is shaping up to be! And the millennium is just beginning.

We are sending this e-mail to let you all know about an amazing event! As
of today, we now have a new American National Holiday called ONE DAY in
Peace. Really! President Clinton is signing this Congressional resolution
into a holiday today!!!

In November of 1999, the United Nations adopted a Resolution calling for the
entire world to celebrate "ONE DAY in Peace, January 1, 2000.

Over the next year (2000), a young man by the name of Gregory Smith and an
angel by the name of Linda Grover, as well as countless others we don't even
know, took a dream that many worked on for six years and got a National
Holiday created for ONE DAY. On December 15th, the United States Congress
adopted a Resolution proclaiming every January 1 from 01/01/01 forth will be
known as ONE DAY in Peace, a time to share our hearts and our food with
others. You can read all about it at: www.millenniummeal.org. Check it
out, it's incredible!!

We did it folks, all of us. Anyone who has ever thought that together,
young and old, we could create a better world, made this happen.

Namaste from all of us at the ONE DAY Foundation, here in beautiful Sedona

"US Congress Passes "One Day In Peace' Resolution

USA, Washington, D.C. - In the midst of the election turmoil
which gripped the USA in late October, a resolution was
quietly, and unanimously passed by the US Congress, declaring
the first of January each year as "One Day In Peace."
Co-sponsored by 8 senators and 27 members of the House Of
Representatives, Senate Resolution 138 brings into focus the
growing concern that many Americans feel for peace.

Thanks to Jacques Allrich, Jr., a terrible scheme has been brought to
our attention.

A bill is being drawn up which will be appended to a complicated HMO
bill which WILL NOT SEEM to be controversial. Both sides of the aisle
want to reign in some of the abuses of the HMO's. So far, so good.
However, if this bill slips through, the F.D.A. will then be empowered
to regulate natural (herbal) products. Thus you would need a
prescription to get your Echinacea, Vital Nutrition, etc.

It would devastate the health food industry while lining the pockets
of physicians.

The email addresses of all of the Senators and Congressmen are
currently available. Also, some unique software has been written which
can send an email to each legislator. The email appears to have come
from you. It is tempting to just go ahead and use it but, without your
permission, that would be deceptive and downright unethical. With our
large subscriber base we can probably stop this outrage in it's tracks.
Imagine a legislator receiving 30+ thousand emails demanding that this
nefarious appendage be removed from what is otherwise a good bill!

If you share our conviction that herbs remain unregulated then all you
must do is:

1: Send an email to jon5454@yahoo.com

2: Type "Herbs - A prescription item?" in the subject box.

3: Type "OK" in the text box. The OK will give John your permission to
send an email to all senators and congressmen asking them to remove the
clause in the new bill that will require us to have a prescription to
buy herbs.

If you will take a few minutes and forward this to your friends, or
post it on a news/discussion group we will gain thousands of new voices.

The alternative for not responding would be to resign yourself to
paying $50 or more for your favorite herbal remedy. Not to mention a
visit to the doctor every time you need anything and of course obtaining
his or her permission to purchase the herbs.

Thank you,

From: news@democrats.com

Dear Friend of Democrats.com,

At the urging of our more than 15,000 members and subscribers, we have
been gathering evidence of official misconduct and deliberate fraud in the
Florida presidential election.

With the more than $25,000 you have contributed, we've hired lawyers and
investigators and begun our own investigation of several extremely
disturbing allegations.

This weekend, we have been in contact with several Members of Congress to
secure their commitment to challenging Florida's electors on Saturday when
Congress meets. You should anticipate a major announcement about this by

If we are to succeed, we urgently need three things:

1. Call your Senators and Representative IMMEDIATELY.
Call the Washington DC office and the district office (you'll find both
numbers in our Guide), and if there is no one to speak to, leave a
message. Tell them you are a constituent (leave your address) and urge
them to vote to reject Florida's 25 Electors on January 6 in order to
preserve our Democracy. We URGENTLY need a Democratic Senator to co-
sponsor the challenge, so call your Democratic Senators (if you have any)

2. We need to demonstrate overwhelming public support for the challenge.
Please forward this e-mail to your friends and colleagues and ask them to
forward it to their friends and colleagues. Please visit
http://TrustthePeople.com to subscribe to our lists, and in the Actions
section do as many of the "Ten Things You Can Do to Help" as you can.

3. We need to launch a public relations campaign of sufficient scale that
it will force the political establishment and the news media to confront
what the American people already know -- that Gore won more votes in
Florida. The integrity of American democracy depends on opening our eyes
and acknowledging this truth. We need your financial support. We need EACH
of our members and subscribers to contribute to demonstrate breadth of our
support. Even if you can only give $10 the number of contributors is as
important as the amount we raise. We will spend every dollar we can gather
on the most effective advertising we can buy.

Both the House and Senate must agree, so if the Democrats are unified we
still need 5 Republicans in the House to join us for the challenge to
succeed. But even if we fail, we expect to be better off.

First, the clarity of Gore's victory in Florida will reveal itself. The
Miami Herald estimates that when they complete the count now underway of
votes missed by the machines, Gore will have won Florida by 23,000 votes.

Second, the magnitude of the Bush brothers' complicity in the conspiracy
to suppress voter turnout by illegal means will gradually be revealed.

As the truth is revealed, the vote by Congressional Republicans to give
Florida stolen Electors to George W. Bush will become a disastrous mark of
dishonor that will cost many of them their seats. The challenge will also
galvanize the Democrats in Congress, and strengthen both their resolve and
their ability to deny Bush's most extreme cabinet appointments, including
John Ashcroft.

Thank you for all of the support and attention you've given us in our
first year. We are proud of the community we have begun to establish and
we look forward to 2001 with great hope and confidence in our collective
ability to realize the promise of American democracy.

Subject: Another Reason I Do Not Support G.W. Bush
Date: Sat, 23 Dec 2000

Hello Jean,

There are many reasons people do not like, and did NOT vote, for G.W. Bush.
This is just one of them.

Given his record in Texas -- Texas is #1 in executions, but we are last in
the nation in things like health care and education. something is obviously
wrong here.

He calls for Unity. I find that is something that will be difficult to do.

From: dpatwood <dpatwood@igc.org>

Despite calls for unity by national leaders, it will be difficult for
many Americans to support George W. Bush as President.

It isn't just that Al Gore won the national popular vote and probably
would have become President if Bush and company had not prevented all the
votes in Florida from being counted.

Nor is it just because Bush is backed by right-wing interests that care
little for the poor, minorities, the environment, or even democracy.

No, many people will have a difficult time supporting Bush because he is
the nation's Chief Executioner with over 150 notches on his belt since he
became Governor of Texas in 1995. Personally, he reminds me of some South
American dictators who are now on trial for human rights abuses.

Although Bush has claimed that he was merely carrying out Texas laws, it
is very clear that he embraced the death penalty with fervor.

* He supported bills to shorten the appeals process and speed up

* He supported the execution of mentally-ill and mentally-retarded

* He supported the execution of youthful offenders who had been horribly
abused and neglected as children.

* He vetoed a bill that would have improved the legal defense for the

* He did not intervene in executions even when it was clear that a
defendant's legal defense was inadequate and flawed, when
international treaties and laws were violated, when a prisoner was clearly
rehabilitated, or even when there were strong indications of innocence.

Bush did not tell the truth when he said that the death penalty "saves
lives". The death penalty has no deterrent value and Bush knows that.

He did not tell the truth when he asserted that the criminal justice
system in Texas was fair to all defendants and that an innocent person had
never been executed. Numerous studies have shown this to be not true.

He also did not tell the truth when he asserted that he could do nothing
to intervene in an execution unless he received a recommendation from the
Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles. Bush appointed this Board and could
have his way with it any time he wanted.

Would other civilized nations elect their Chief Executioner to their
highest office as has happened in the USA? Hopefully not, but of course
most civilized nations no longer execute their citizens.

Election Anger Fuels Inaugural Protesters

Washington Post
Thursday, December 21, 2000; Page A10

The raw wounds left by the presidential election finale have created enough
irritation to unleash one of the largest inauguration protests in years,
according to veteran organizers and police officials.

"This will be by far the biggest counter-inauguration since the 1973 Nixon
counter-inauguration," predicted Brian Becker, co-director of the
International Action Center in New York, who has demonstrated at numerous
presidential swearing-in events. "We organize protests not infrequently, and
we know when something has legs and when it doesn't have legs. This one

At the second inauguration of President Richard M. Nixon, police estimated
there were 25,000 to 100,000 demonstrators, including some who threw fruit
and stones at Nixon's car. The total crowd was about 300,000.

D.C. police are expecting about 750,000 people on Jan. 20 when
President-elect Bush is sworn in, and they said they think many
demonstrators will be content to voice their displeasure peacefully.

Becker's group, like several others hoping to flood parts of the city on
Inauguration Day, had been planning to be in Washington no matter who won
the election. But enough people think the outcome was illegitimate, he said,
that it has cranked up protest passion. Within hours of the Dec. 12 U.S.
Supreme Court decision blocking Vice President Gore's effort to recount
votes in Florida, Becker and other organizers said, their Web sites were
deluged with inquiries.

"There's a tremendous amount of spontaneous organizing going on," said
Becker, 48.

A rainbow of left-leaning groups had planned to rally on the Mall to
vent outrage at a variety of demons [notice how Washington Post usees
the term 'demons' to put down what are actually injustices and
outrages -ed], including racism, the death penalty and the corporate
influence on politics. But complaints that some Florida votes were not
counted, including those of many African Americans, have given
demonstrators powerful common issues.

Unlike the street protests against the World Bank in April, no civil
disobedience has been planned, organizers say. They said the demonstrations
will feature signs, chants, giant puppets, skits and a squad of radical
stilt walkers being trained in Philadelphia.

"We are not planning to shut down the inauguration," Becker said. "We are
planning to make it plain that the inaugural route is not the private
property of those who support the death penalty, so we're going to be
well-represented on that parade route."

D.C. police aren't taking any chances with protesters' intentions, according
to Executive Assistant Chief Terrance W. Gainer. He said he expects fewer
than 5,000 unruly demonstrators might try to disrupt the inauguration, along
with thousands of peaceful demonstrators.

In addition to the D.C. force, thousands of suburban and federal officers
will participate in what officials described as an unprecedented level of

On Monday, several dozen people attended a Justice Action Movement
meeting. Most were students or young members of progressive
organizations and unions, but several were old enough to have
protested Nixon's inauguration. Justice Action Movement has dubbed
Jan. 20 the "InaugurAuction," a reference to members' belief that the
major parties buy the White House with corporate funds. [More like,
the White House is being auctioned off to corporations.. but
Washignton Post couldn't allow itself to undertsand that not just the
two Parties, but corporations themselves, are being criticized, given
that Post itself is a large corporation -ed]

"Because of a corrupt political system, we now have a president who is going
to be threatening the lives of many innocent people because of his support
for the death penalty, military policies abroad and free trade," said Adam
Eidinger, 27, a movement organizer.

At the meeting, the group voted not to use violence, vandalism, weapons,
alcohol or drugs. They also decided to remain in small groups scattered all
over the Mall, employing creative visual effects and stilt walkers to make
their points.

After the meeting, several organizers said they suspected a police
infiltrator was in their midst. A man with a goatee looked just like a
plainclothes officer who figured prominently in confrontations with World
Bank demonstrators, according to organizers who said they have videotapes.

Before ending a brief telephone interview with The Washington Post, the man
denied he was an undercover officer. A police spokesman said there is no one
on the force with the name the man used at the meeting. Gainer confirmed
that the police have infiltrated the protesters, but he didn't identify

"They're looking for excuses to shut us down," Eidinger said.

This week, a few members of Justice Action Movement held a practice
InaugurAuction in front of the White House, offering to auction the building
for $10 to carpenters building bleachers for the parade.

"I don't feel this particular election demonstrates ideally what the
presidency is for this country," said Elizabeth Croyden, 30, an actress and
film producer who participated. "It exposes a lot of flaws in the system,
and I'm upset about it. If you don't get involved, how can you make a

I would like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
May the light of Spirit that you reflect so marvelously in your work as a Lightserver continue to shine on you, and as a result of the wonderful information you relay on your network, fill those who receive it more and more each day so that it may help the Consciousness and Light spread throughout our planet.

Specially I would like to thank you for your work on the Meditation Focus. It is the most powerful initiative of conscious prayer I have seen in recent times, and since I live in Pakistan, I personally feel very blessed by the prayers and meditations of those who participate in the Meditation Focus.

I would like to know if you have any other subscribers on your list from this part of the world. I feel rather isolated here as far as my line of thinking. It would be very good for me to be in touch with other like-minded people in the region.

Thank you again for all!

You asked that I send only select pieces, so here's one that's personal

Joy through the season. Thanks for all your good work. I look forward
to meeting you in person one day and want you to know I appreciate your
contribution to the past year as I dare say I will to the one ahead.

Frankie Lee

Dear Ones,

Today the Glendale News Press ran a piece on our Art of LIVING Coalition
documentary "CHOOSING PEACE NOW: A Model for What is Possible in Our

Already I heard from a school teacher who read the piece and is
interested in lending her support to help spread the word and extend the
Coalition so we can move Choosing Peace to completion. Everyone
contributing just a little can make it simple...

I'm really excited about this project because it's such a powerful model
of how I envision The Art of LIVING pioneering a whole new generation of
pro-active media. Think Live Aid sustained 52 weeks a year as a
resource base for personal and social activism and more enlightened (aka
"conscious") living! That's a snapshot of what I see with greater and
greater clarity every day.

The last few months have made blatantly clear the powerful hold the
ego-centricized mind has on the human family. To follow Einstein's
popular statement to its natural conclusion - we must go beyond the
level at which "the problem" was created in order to effect the change
we really want to see in the world.

So we were running "on automatic"...Now we know better!

So, the question I keep asking myself is, "Haven't I, haven't we left
our dreams in the future long enough already? What if I/we simply
shifted gears right here, right now.

Shelf the cynic (just a disappointed idealist anyhow). Shelf the bratty
reactionary...and CHOOSE.

My very strong sense (and conviction) is that the crisis we're presently
experiencing has only secondarily to do with all the stuff we riddle
ourselves with on the surface. What we're really experiencing is a
two-fold crisis - of perception and separation. So, it is here that the
shift rightfully must take place.

We Care For Youth, the group of young people and affirming adults whose
story we're telling in Choosing Peace is such an excellent model of what
is possible for us all. Many of the WCFY kids grew up with first-hand
experience of violence. They and practically everyone they knew believed
that life was the way it was and they might as well get used to it.
Then something completely different happened...and they were forever

They also became the best change agents imaginable.

The ingredient that accounted for the shift? Absolute acceptance, right
where they were. Love, free of attachment to needing to "fix" or
"change." Affirmation of their precious life. This is the foundation
upon which Linda and Jose, the two adults who founded and run We Care
For Youth, built their success with the kids and community of Glendale.
From here all things are possible.

My observation of the world at large - people recognize change is called
for, but oftentimes they don't know HOW, or they're so inundated they
can't breath long enough to get the perspective they need to go beyond
reactivity to true discernment and responsiveness.

People are missing certain integral understandings of who we are that
are sorely in need of being incorprated into the mix - like How the Mind

And How to be in their/our Feeling body

...so they/we can know whether something is right - dynamically, as in
"inside out" (vs "outside in" enforced according to some static
"I know better than you" rule)..

They need a way to understand themselves that is large enough to embrace
who we really are.

Enter The Art of LIVING...

I'm an artist of life, you're an artist of life. We're creative by
nature. A ha! - We have CHOICE!

What's possible for the folks in Glendale is possible for us all.

People have to believe they're worth it to believe it's worth it. And
they need the tools to step fully into the process along with us.

Below you'll find a write up on Choosing Peace Now. There are a number
of elements beyond the one-hour doc, designed to really bring Peace
alive in people's lives. Here's one - Imagine being able to respond
to the requests that are coming in regularly these days - from the
heartland of America to Zimbabwe (literally) and provide all the
elements necessary to create a Peace Conference anywhere in the world,
in schools, in community centers, in neighborhoods - immediately
downloadable from the internet!

the reporter, tells me it will be up on-line for a week...

A Model for What is Possible in Our Schools

CHOOSING PEACE NOW is a powerful pro-active television special about a
group of teenagers, together with supportive adults, who have made the
commitment to "live peace now."

Inviting us into the city-wide Peace Conference they created and have
evolved each year since 1997, in their hometown of Glendale, California,
CHOOSING PEACE is a vibrant demonstration of how a significant shift is
taking place - from "being acted upon by life" to "becoming actively
involved in the process of living." Just as it is possible for these
young people, many of whom grew-up around violence and considered it to
be an accepted part of life, it is possible for us all.

CHOOSING PEACE NOW is intended to serve as a catalyst for both a Local
and National Campaign to create peaceful solutions in our schools and
communities, and a more life enhancing atmosphere for our youth to

In the wake of Littleton and other violent incidents in schools
throughout America, it has become glaringly apparent that change is
called for. The knee-jerk reaction is to blame the perceived „other‰
and attempt to enforce control. The higher ground and, indeed, the only
response that can achieve the desired result, is to recognize that
-we're in this together- and become the change we want to see in the
world by nurturing and growing peace in our own hearts. This is what

While many are just beginning to address the challenges, Glendale's We
Care For Youth program - of which these young people are a part - is
already eight years into the process. Since their inception,
founder/directors Linda Maxwell and José Quintanar have helped turn
around the lives of thousands of "at-risk" teenagers. Now we have the
opportunity to positively impact millions of others - by presenting
their peace efforts as a model, providing the example along with the
practical tools to empower people everywhere to create peaceful
solutions in their communities.

In CHOOSING PEACE NOW, the hard realities of violence are brought home
when incarcerated youth and youth crippled by gang violence share their
stories. In contrast, non-violence is shown to be the more viable
alternative - as participants walk the labyrinth as a way to leave
behind problems and arrive at peaceful solutions, honestly discuss
prejudice, create art that relates their fears and hopes, and We Care
For Youth organizers radiate the obvious enthusiasm that comes with
being a part of something that is positively impacting how we view our
world and act in it.

Accompanying the immersive experiences of the day are close-to-camera
interviews with participating youth ages 14 to 20 and adult advocates
that include Los Angeles District Attorney Gil Garcetti, representatives
of various spiritual traditions, Glendale's Superintendent of Schools
Jim Brown and Chief of Police Russell Silverling.

Environmental news from GRIST MAGAZINE

After a decade of debate, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released
final standards for labeling organic foods last month, siding with
environmentalists and the organic farming industry on nearly every
contentious issue. The standards, which will become fully effective
in 2002, ban the use of irradiation, biotechnology, and sewer-sludge
fertilizer for any food labeled organic. All three methods would
have been allowed under the standards proposed by the USDA in 1997,
but the department did an about-face after receiving nearly 300,000
public comments protesting their inclusion. The final standards also
ban the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers in growing
organic foods, and the use of antibiotics in organic meats. Sales of
organic foods in the U.S. have increased by 20 percent each year
since 1990, reaching $6 billion in 1999.
